Ian McKellen: The Hobbit will be just as exciting as The Lord of the Rings

Ian McKellen has insisted that The Hobbit will be just as 'exciting' as The Lord of the Rings after fans slammed the way it looked in 3D.

The actor, 73, claimed the 3D format created The imaginary creature 'more exciting' that the Lord of the Rings trio.

He told The BBC: 'I've seen enough of it to grasp it's aiming to be even as exciting as Lord of the Rings.

'In reality in some senses it's a lot of exciting as a result of it's in 3 dimensions.

'It's not the kind of crude 3D that comes out of the screen. Rather it brings you into Middle Earth. You see around the corners. You see everything.'
